The 30 second summary
Amazing looks ✅
Great feel ✅
High ball speed for the category ✅
More forgiving than it looks✅
Combo's well with T100/T200 irons to fit a wide range of handicaps✅
In todays competitive iron market, many brands are attempting to create a players performance unicorn, and the Titleist T150 may very well be the best of the bunch.
What I love
- Looks - The looks of this iron in my opinion, are sublime. From address, in the bag, on the rack at the store, however you look at it, this is one of the best looking irons in the category. It's barely discernable from its bladier T100 sister, which is widely considered one of the best looking players irons on the market.
- The forgiveness - For an iron that looks pretty traditional and blade like, it packs a load of forgiveness, not quite to the standard of an ultra forgiving model, but this iron makes many misses more than manageable.
- Blend-ability - As is the trend with many irons in the 'players' category, this easily can be mixed in a combo set with more the forgiving models ( T200, T350) and more precision models (T100, 620 MB/CB).
What could be better
- Offer black finish irons from the start. The Titleist playbook (which others do too) of releasing the black limited edition the year an iron model is going out of the lineup feels like a bit of a cash grab to infuse some buzz to a model thats hitting end of life. The black irons look so good, give the people what they want right from the start!
Who is it for
- Dad's like me who love the idea and look of blades, but who's games need a little more help than they used to.
- Golfers who like, or are curios to the idea of playing a combo set.
- Related to the above, as far as HC range. I really think this iron can be played by a wide range of HC. For higher handicaps you could combo these as your short irons, with T200 in your mids. And for lower HC's you could go the opposite, have these in your long irons and the T100 in your short irons or even some blades if thats your cup of tea.
Who is it NOT for
- Golfers looking to max out height and distance, there are more forgiving and higher launching options even within the same iron line from Titleist.
- Owners of prior gen - the T100s - who expect massive performance differences. The prior gen model was a revolution, this line is more of an evolution, a little more forgiving than the t100s from its geometry, but minimally so.
Alternatives
Theres no shortage of alternatives in this category of iron, so if for whatever reason the feel, look or just the brand of Titleist doesnt agree with you, but you love the concept of this iron. These are a few intriguing options you should take in the fitting bay with you.
Srixon ZX7 Mkii - So many of the positive things i said above could be said about this set which has a cult following amongst amateurs and a unique and interesting sole design to promote good turf interaction.
Cobra King Tour - Ive always had a fondness for the Cobra brand, I played a full bag of cobra when my game was in peak form and part of me wants to go back to the brand to maybe catch some good nostalgia vibes, and if I did, I would build my set around these irons.
Mizuno Pro 243 - This is on my must test list for this year. Mizuno is touting the largest improvement in performance of this iron of all irons in the lineup compared to its prior generation. There's an added level of forgiveness and ballspeed retention due to certain technologies and manufacturing processes.
Final Thoughts
If you're in the market for this particular type of iron - Player Performance - and a more traditional look and feel suits your style, then this is one of the best. Though my bag is somewhat of an annual carousel of rotating gear, the T150 currently has the spot in my bag because it just checks all the boxes of what I look for in an iron.
